Patient Participation Group

What is a PPG?

A Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of patients registered with a GP Practice who have no medical training but have an interest in the services provided by their GP Surgery. A PPG aims to represent the patient’s views and cross barriers, embracing diversity and working in partnership with the practice to improve the common understanding of the services the practice offers and help improve those services for all.

PPGs can play several roles, including, but not limited to;

  •       Advising the practice from the patient’s perspective
  •     Organising health and well-being events
  •      Communicating with the wider patient population
  •      Running volunteer services and support groups to meet local needs
  •      Carrying out research into the views of those who use the practice (and their carers)
  •      Influencing the practice or wider NHS to improve commissioning
  •      Fundraising to improve the services provided by the practice

There is no set way in which a PPG works. The aims and projects of each group depend entirely on local needs, but the main aim of a PPG is ensuring that the practice puts the patient, and improving health, at the heart of everything the group does. Recent projects our PPG has worked on include

  •      A dementia carers support and signposting service
  •      A survey of our patients to look for ways to improve our service.
  •     Speaking to the MP for Rossendale to discuss the future of general practice for residents in the area
